Mayweather vs. Pacquiao
Sports fans will get a late Christmas present when Mayweather and Pacquiao square off in the ring. The most anticipated fight of the decade, probably the century, finally has a date. Filipino sensation Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao will step into the ring on March 13, 2010 to face undefeated “Pretty Boy” Floyd Mayweather, in what appears to be an epic clash of the ages. Gabriel Frias, a junior at South East High School said, “ I think Floyd is going to win.” Endi Torres, another junior said, “ I think Pacquiao is going to win.”With the purse of 50-50, the fight will be at the welterweight limit of 147 pounds. The weight should favor Mayweather since he has fought at that weight for such a long time, but the gloves are 8oz. and that should aid Pacquiao because he’s faster and stronger. Conrad Herrera, a junior at SEHS said, “Pacquiao is really fast and strong, and if he can take Cotto’s punch, then he should be able to take Mayweather’s punch.” The setting for the fight is still up for grabs between frontrunners MGM Grand Casino and New Orleans. The question is, “Who’s the best fighter in the world?” This question will be answered on March 13. With the Pacman coming off an impressive stoppage of Miguel Cotto, he would appear to be the favorite. Not only does Pacquiao appear to be the favorite because of the specific fight with Cotto, but because Mayweather, in the past two years, hasn’t beat his opponents in such an electrifying way as Pacquiao. Nonetheless, Mayweather, too, is coming off a fight against Mexican legend Juan Manuel Marquez, a boxer that Pacquiao has struggled to beat. Although Pacquiao seemed to have his hands full against Marquez, he was clearly a superior fighter against Oscar De La Hoya and Ricky Hatton; two boxers Mayweather struggled to defeat. The fight is such a huge event that even non-boxing fans want to see it. Andrew Diaz, a junior at SEHS said, “I don’t care about any other fights or boxing in general, but I HAVE TO SEE THIS FIGHT!”
